Launch of the AI4DIET project

How can animal feed rations be optimised to support the agroecological transition of livestock farming systems? This is the central focus of the AI4DIET project, a winner of the latest PEPR call for proposals, whose launch event took place on 26 May at INRAE Centre-Siège in Paris.

Led by a consortium comprising AgroParisTech, INRAE and Inria, the project brings together a broad group of stakeholders: four technical institutes (Idele, Ifip, Itab, Itavi), the French Association of Animal Breeding, Axiom, Eliance, Nucleus and Siel, as well as various stakeholders in the animal feed sector.

AI4DIET (The contribution of AI to ration optimisation models to support the agroecological transition of livestock systems in different contexts) aims to better account for the diversity of feed resources and livestock, and the multiple environmental, economic and societal challenges facing the sector today. To this end, the project will develop ration optimisation models using artificial intelligence.

This launch event provided an opportunity to compare the project’s scientific ambitions with the realities on the ground, thanks to presentations by two key players in the animal feed sector: CCPA and Adisseo. Their insights highlighted the rapid evolution of the animal nutrition sector. Beyond technical and economic performance, formulation tools must now incorporate objectives relating to animal welfare, emissions reduction and the self-sufficiency of livestock farms.

The event also provided an introduction to digital approaches and helped participants understand the various architectures that shape data and modelling.

The work will be organised around five complementary work packages, covering:

  • the co-development of evolving feeding strategies with stakeholders
  • the production and structuring of data and models relating to animals’ responses to rations
  • the development of predictive models for feed values, animal requirements and
  • performance
  • the design of algorithms to optimise rations
  • and the dissemination of results via a digital platform

Thank you to all the partners and stakeholders for their participation and commitment to this wonderful project!
